The Fish

In July of 2000, Daniel Maher Stained Glass was invited to take part in the Windows Art Project in Davis Square, part of the Art Beat celebration in Somerville, Massachusetts. The Somerville Arts Council chose the theme of the Mystic River for Art Beat to highlight awareness of the River, which is currently underused and in danger of being ignored in the development of areas around the river.

Given this theme, we created The Exquisite Fish. The idea behind The Exquisite Fish came from the surrealistic parlour game The Exquisite Corpse. Each artist at Daniel Maher Stained Glass was assigned sections of fish to create. The only established link between the sections is the outline of the fish body. The inevitable uniqueness of each panel along with the beauty and variety of glass that created this one fantastic fish symbolically represents the beauty and bio-diversity of the Mystic River.

The fish was installed into a storefront window in front of a lightbox to make it visible to passersby on the street and sidewalk. At approximately 5' wide, this fish was a truly a spectacular sight. The Map of the Fish shows how the fish was divided, and which member of the studio worked on each section.
