Ascension window at St. John's

The Ascension Window by the J.R. Lamb Studio is located in the Chancel of historic St. John's Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Located in downtown Montgomery, the Church building dates to 1855 and the current chancel dates to 1869. The stained glass windows range in dates from the 1880's through the 1960's and includes windows by several studios, most notably the Connick and Tiffany studios. The Ascension window is 10' x 20' and was dedicated in 1900.

The window was in very poor condition due to the ravages of time, improper sizing and installation and previous poor restoration. The bottom sections of the window were also covered by and flashed directly to the roof of the adjoining Parish Hall. Aesthetically the window appeared dark and dingy from many layers of dirt on the surface of the glass and between the layers of glass. A layer of yellowed and scratched lexan further dimmed the light of the window.

The restoration of the window included the removal and transport of the window to Somerville, Massachusetts, the complete disassembly and releading of the window, infill painted overplating on numerous flesh pieces, replacement of poor replacement glass from previous designs and restructuring the T-bar detail separating sections to provide a proper installation detail.

On site work included replacement of the wood frame and protective glazing with a custom isothermal venting system.

Significant contributors to the project were Julie Sloan, Conservation Consultant; Camille Bowman, Alabama Historical Commission; Bob Canter, Master Craftsman at Alabama Historical Commission; Mike Jerrel, sextant; and Reverend Robert Wisnewski, Rector.
